North South Ministerial Council

The North/South Ministerial Council (NSMC) was established in December 1999 on the entry into force of the British-Irish Agreement, which was signed by the British and Irish Governments as part of the Agreement reached in the Multi-Party Negotiations on Good Friday in Belfast on 10 April 1998. The NSMC is the lead institution in developing North/South co-operation, bringing together Ministers from Northern Ireland and the Irish Government. The role of the Council is to develop consultation, co-operation and action on all-island and cross-border matters of mutual interest. It also provides leadership and direction for the six North/South implementation bodies and Tourism Ireland Limited.
The Council is supported by a Joint Secretariat in Armagh staffed by personnel from OFMDFM and the Irish Civil Service.
