About Us
In 2000 the Victims Unit was established within the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister following the recognition that over the previous 30 years and more the needs of the victims of the conflict had not been addressed.
When the Victims Unit was set up, we set about developing a cross-departmental strategy to address the needs of victims' groups and individuals. The resulting document, "Reshape, Rebuild, Achieve" (PDF 92.8 KB, 36 pages) was published and in place in April 2002.
We are the accountable body with overall responsibility for a Measure of the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (Peace ll) designed to assist with the reconciliation and integration of victims, particulary through retraining, re-skilling and re-employment. The Community Foundation for Northern Ireland
acts as Intermediary Funding Body responsible for the distribution of these funds.
We are also responsible for the management of the Victims and Survivors Groups Core Funding and Development Grant Schemes. The Community Relations Council
operates these schemes and distributes the funds on our behalf.
