Sexual Orientation

The programme for government commits us to preparing and consulting on a strategic action plan to identify and tackle issues and inequalities based on sexual orientation.
We have placed a strong emphasis on partnership working with sexual orientation groups and representatives in the development of this strategy and action plan. Our model for consultation was one favoured by organisations with whom we engaged during the production of the Gender Equality Strategy. We have now established an informal group (‘Reference Group’) of unpaid representatives of sexual orientation groups and individuals with whom we meet.
In addition, using a power in the Equality Act 2006, we intend to bring forward a set of regulations to prohibit discrimination on the ground of Sexual Orientation in the provision of goods, facilities and services in Northern Ireland.
