Gender Equality

“Equality is an important issue for the Executive and for society. Inequalities exist, and we must strive to eliminate all forms of inequality.”
In the Programme for Government 2008-2011, the Northern Ireland Executive state their commitment to tackling remaining gender inequalities, to implementing the cross departmental Gender Equality Strategy and to working towards the total elimination of the gender pay gap. In addition they state they will  ensure that there are effective programmes and strategies aimed at achieving the eradication of all forms of violence against women, and examine strategies to combat the lack of women’s representation in political and public life and to ensuring access to affordable quality childcare.
The Gender and Sexual Orientation Equality unit are responsible for supporting and co-ordinating actions across departments and their agencies, to implement the Gender Equality Strategy.
