About the Sustainable Development Unit

The Sustainable Development Unit oversees the implementation of the Sustainable Development Strategy across Government. You can access the Strategy and related information here.
The Northern Ireland Sustainable Development Strategy, “First Steps Towards Sustainability (PDF 3.74 MB) was launched in 2006.  Following the launch of the Strategy, responsibility for the implementation of sustainable development was transferred to OFMDFM highlighting that the principles of sustainable development must lie at the heart of Government.
A review is currently underway in OFMDFM with a view to the production of a new Sustainable Development Strategy. While it is anticipated that the shape and format of the new document will be different from the previously produced Strategy, we believe that the new Strategy has the potential to act effectively as an enabling mechanism for the wider sustainable development agenda and, in particular, to inform and assist the development of the second Sustainable Development Implementation Plan.
The Sustainable Development Unit has responsibility for:
  • the development, oversight and monitoring of the Northern Ireland Sustainable Development Strategy and Implementation Plan;
  • policy coordination and mainstreaming sustainable development across Government;
  • delivery of a number of key strategy objectives directly; and
  • working closely with Sustainable Development Commission.
