European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008
2008 has been designated the ‘European Year of Intercultural Dialogue’(EYID) by the European Union. The overall purpose of the year is to promote intercultural dialogue as an instrument to assist European citizens, and all those living in the European Union, in acquiring the knowledge and abilities to deal with a more open and more complex cultural environment.
EYID 2008 aims to raise awareness of the importance of developing a European citizenship which is open to the world, respectful of cultural diversity, and based on common values.
The theme of Intercultural Dialogue is particularly relevant in terms of our own changing society as it encourages us all to “explore the benefits of our rich cultural heritage and opportunities to learn from different cultural traditions.”
Junior Minister Jeffrey Donaldson recently underlined the Executive’s support for the year:
“OFMDFM are fully supportive of the European Year of Intercultural dialogue. Greater communication and enhanced understanding of the rich and diverse nature of European culture is of benefit to us all.”
Junior Minister Gerry Kelly also spoke of the important role Intercultural dialogue had to play:
“Intercultural dialogue is about moving beyond mere tolerance of difference towards a transformed society where cultures can exchange and interact constructively and with mutual respect”.
