About the Department

The Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister (OFMDFM) is a fully functioning department of the Northern Ireland administration with a wide range of responsibilities.
The strategic objectives of the department include :
  • supporting Ministers and the institutions of government;
  • building a programme for government and modernising government programme;
  • promoting better community relations, a culture of equality and rights,
  • and targeting social need and promoting social inclusion.

The Rt Hon Peter Robinson MP, MLA, is First Minister and Martin McGuinness is deputy First Minister. Junior Ministers are Rt Hon Jeffrey Donaldson MP, MLA and Gerry Kelly MLA.

Sir Nigel Hamilton KCB is the Head of the Department and is also Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service. Mr Hamilton is assisted in the running of OFMDFM by the Departmental Board and Senior Management Team. He also meets regularly with the Permanent Secretaries Group. (PSG).
