Promoting Social Inclusion (PSI) Disability

The PSI Disability Working Group was established in November 2004, in response to the Breaking the Barriers Conference (February 2004).
This Group was given the task of identifying the main barriers to participation experienced by people with disabilities and to make recommendations on how these could be removed. The Working Group was made up of representatives from various disability organisations, the Equality, Children’s and Human Rights Commissions as well as officials from Government Departments. The Group’s conclusions and recommendations represent a culmination of a significant amount of work involving a major survey of people with an activity limiting disability, consultation with people with disabilities as well as the expert advice within the Group itself. The recommendations are also firmly anchored around the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which aim to promote dignity, independence and access.
The Report was presented to the First Minister Peter D. Robinson MP MLA and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP MLA at the Belfast City Hall on Thursday 3rd December 2009.
